The Council of Ministers is expected to make significant decisions today, February 18, 2026, regarding Contract Soldiers (SYOP). According to statements by the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, the age limit for service in the National Guard will be increased from 42 to 57 years, as well as the recruitment limit from 27 to 35. In addition, a merit-based process will be established for the advancement of SYOP to Contract Non-Commissioned Officers through written examinations, with the possibility of promotion to the rank of Sergeant. Finally, the special monthly allowance for SYOP will be increased from 100 to 150 euros and from 200 to 250 euros for those serving in special units (Mountain Commando Squadrons, Underwater Demolition Teams, demining units, nurses). These decisions are based on the economic development and the need to strengthen the defense and security of the country.
