Erhurman: Refers Fiber Optic Agreement to 'Supreme' Court

The Turkish Cypriot leader, Tufan Erhurman, has referred the 'law' regarding the 'cooperation protocol' between Turkey and the pseudo-state concerning the development of fiber optic infrastructure to the 'supreme constitutional court' in the occupied territories. This move comes after strong reactions from the Turkish Cypriot community, from trade unions and the 'telecommunications department'. Erhurman justifies the referral to the court citing 'article' 146 of the 'constitution', while expressing his expectation for a written opinion from the 'Attorney General' before any action. The protocol concerns the awarding of the project to the Turkish company Türk Telecom. The reactions focus on concerns about increased Turkish influence in the occupied territories and the potential undermining of local businesses. Trade unions had requested Erhurman's intervention, expressing their opposition to the agreement.
