Erhurman: Stagnation in the Issue of Checkpoints - Special Mention to Delays in Agios Dometios

The Turkish Cypriot leader, Tufan Erhurman, expressed his disappointment over the stagnation in the issue of opening new checkpoints and improving existing ones, arguing that there is no progress in the relevant discussions. He considered that the inability to resolve such a simple issue indicates the inability to resolve the Cyprus problem as a whole. Mr. Erhurman referred to the problems faced by citizens at the checkpoints, making special mention of the delays in Agios Dometios, as well as the proposals for Mia Milia, Louroutzina and Pyroi. The issue was also raised during his meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. He argued that the opening of new crossings should not be treated as a tool for gaining economic or political advantage, but as a means of facilitating the daily lives of citizens and contact between the two communities. Regarding the Agios Dometios checkpoint, he stated that the works on the Turkish Cypriot side have been completed and he is awaiting the completion of the corresponding works on the Greek Cypriot side, as well as the deployment of sufficient staff for control. Additionally, he referred to delays in the issuance of vehicle licenses at the Deryneia and Astromerita checkpoints and reiterated the proposals for opening crossing points in Mia Milia and Louroutzina, as well as the road connecting Athienou with Aglantzia. Concluding, he called on all parties to take responsibility for promoting the process of resolving the Cyprus issue.
