Erhurman: Stagnation at Crossing Points Hinders the Essence of the Cyprus Issue

Turkish Cypriot leader Erhurman expressed his disappointment over the stagnation in the issue of opening new crossing points and improving existing ones, arguing that the inability to resolve this simple issue undermines the prospects for a solution to the Cyprus problem. Mr. Erhurman referred to the problems faced by citizens at the checkpoints, especially at Agios Dometios, and the proposals for Mia Milia, Louroujina, and Pyroi. According to the Turkish Cypriot leader, the issue was also discussed with the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, in New York. Mr. Erhurman emphasized that increasing the number of crossings could have positive effects on contact between the two communities, even if this entails economic consequences for the occupied territories. The priority, according to him, is to facilitate the daily lives of citizens. Regarding Agios Dometios, Mr. Erhurman stated that the widening works on the Turkish Cypriot side have been completed and he is awaiting the completion of the corresponding works on the Greek Cypriot side, as well as the deployment of sufficient personnel for control. He also referred to delays in the issuance of vehicle registration documents at the Deryneia and Astromeritis checkpoints. For Mia Milia, Louroujina, and Pyroi, Mr. Erhurman reiterated the proposals for opening new crossing points, including the construction of a new road to connect Athienou with Aglantzia. In conclusion, he called on all parties to take responsibility and create the necessary climate to promote the process of resolving the Cyprus issue.
