Erhiurman: "Nothing New in These 5 Points"

Tufan Erhiurman stated that President Christodoulides' new 5-point proposal on the MoEs contains nothing new and that we are not at the point we would like to be in the negotiations. He emphasized the need to accept "the principles of political equality and rotating presidency" as the basis for discussions. Erhiurman proposed a new meeting of the two leaders without the mediation of the UN, which was accepted by President Christodoulides. According to Erhiurman, President Christodoulides' proposal simply reproduces previous discussions and does not offer substantial progress. He reiterated that political equality and the rotating presidency are essential prerequisites for a fair and sustainable solution to the Cyprus issue. He also stressed the importance of having a time limit for negotiations in order to avoid endless delays. Erhiurman expressed his belief that the Turkish Cypriot people have the will to find a solution and that he represents this will. However, he emphasized that the success of the negotiations depends on the willingness of the Greek Cypriot side to accept the basic principles of political equality and the rotating presidency.
