EU Launches Investigation into Shein for DSA Violations

The European Commission has launched an official investigation into Shein for potential violations of the Digital Services Act (DSA). The investigation focuses on issues such as the platform's addictive design, lack of transparency in recommendation systems, and the distribution of illegal content, including child sexual abuse material. The investigation is based on preliminary analyses, Shein's responses to requests for information, and evidence submitted by third parties. The Commission will examine the systems for restricting the sale of illegal products, the risks associated with addictive design, and the transparency of recommendation systems. Shein is required to disclose the key parameters of its recommendation systems and provide users with options that are not based on profiling. The investigation is being conducted in collaboration with the Irish Digital Services Coordinator, Coimisiún na Meán.
