Forest Department Suspects Arson Behind Scattered Fires in Paphos

Published January 9, 2026, 09:31

The Forest Department believes that the scattered fires that broke out in the Archimanndrita area of Paphos were the result of arson. The fires broke out on Thursday afternoon but did not cause significant damage due to high humidity and early rainfall. Despite the fires occurring outside the jurisdiction of the Forest Department, the department's forces took over the response as the Fire Service could not operate effectively due to the difficult terrain. The fires burned only dry grass and did not threaten property. The Director of the Forest Department, Savvas Iezekiel, expressed regret that the fires appear to have been caused by human intervention, describing these actions as irresponsible and dangerous. Firefighting forces located five different fire hotspots in the area.
