Rise in Sextortion Cases - What to Watch Out For

Police have reported a surge in sextortion incidents, where unknown individuals create fake social media accounts, often posing as women, to deceive unsuspecting victims, primarily men. The perpetrators lure victims into video calls with the intention of recording them in compromising situations and then blackmail them with the threat of publishing the material, typically demanding money through money transfer companies. Police have received reports of victims, including minors. Citizens are urged to be particularly cautious about the people they meet online and to avoid sharing sensitive data with strangers. In the event of blackmail, it is recommended not to make any payments, as this encourages the perpetrators to demand more money. Additionally, they should report and block the fake account on the social media platform. Police also advise citizens to cease all communication with the perpetrator and, for security reasons, to temporarily deactivate their social media account to avoid further targeting and threats. The phenomenon of sextortion poses a serious threat, and awareness and caution are essential to prevent it.
