Paphos Mayor Outraged as Balcony Collapse Highlights Dangerous Living Conditions

Three young people were injured when a balcony collapsed in an apartment building in Paphos. Following the incident, the Mayor of Paphos, Phaedonas Phaedonos, stated that there are approximately 30-40 buildings in the city that are unfit for habitation. He accused these buildings of being rented out, with the Republic of Cyprus subsidizing rents to landlords who rent them to people in appalling conditions, such as without a toilet or bathroom, and with a large number of tenants per apartment (up to 14 people in a two-bedroom apartment). Mr. Phaedonos announced that he will proceed with the eviction of approximately 200 people from a building that has been deemed unsuitable, proposing the opening of the Anarita KΕN for temporary housing.
