Livestock Farmers in Athienou on Alert Over Foot-and-Mouth Disease

Livestock farmers in Athienou are on alert following the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in the wider area. In collaboration with the authorities and the Municipality, they have taken immediate measures to prevent the spread of the virus, which threatens their livestock and property. Farmers express strong concerns about the devastating consequences of a potential outbreak. The president of the Athienou Cattle Breeders Association, Giorgos Papas, emphasized the speed of response and the need to protect the property of farmers, which has been created with hard work and sacrifice. Athienou has approximately 15,000 cows and 15,000 sheep and goats, making the area an important milk production center in Cyprus. Mayor of Athienou, Kyriakos Kareklas, stated that special structures have been placed on the roads to spray vehicles heading to the livestock units. In addition, it was decided to close most of the roads leading to the units, leaving only five entry points open with strict control. The mobilization is taking place in full cooperation with the livestock breeders' associations, with the Municipality covering the costs of the measures. The goal is to prevent the entry of the virus into the area and protect the livestock and property of the farmers.
