A Silent War on Energy

A new report by Eurelectric reveals that European electricity grids are more vulnerable than previously thought, facing increasing risks from physical and hybrid attacks. The report, presented at the Munich Security Conference, rates the level of preparedness of energy companies in Europe at just 6.7 out of 10, indicating significant gaps in the protection of the energy system. Particular concern is focused on high-voltage transformers, substations, and control centers, as their replacement in the event of damage can take up to two years. In addition, digital control systems are increasingly frequent targets of cyberattacks. The experience of Ukraine, where over 1,000 attacks on energy infrastructure have been recorded since the start of the war, underscores the criticality of the situation.
