A Memorial to Arveler and Our Political Crisis

Following the death of Eleni Glykantzis Arveler, her phrase “Everyone is talking today, but no one is listening” takes on particular meaning. Arveler was not merely a Byzantinist, but an intellectual who highlighted the importance of the humanities for progress and civilization. She warned against the danger of alienation from humanistic values and the gradual decline of historical memory and critical thinking in modern society. In her last interviews, she expressed the view that technological education without humanistic education leads to a lack of value system and moral conscience, leaving people vulnerable to dogmatism and propaganda. Education must be an initiation into dialogue, empathy, and questioning.
