Cyprus Tour Guides Call for Control of Unlicensed Tours and Tourist Police

The Cyprus Tour Guides Association expresses strong concerns about the increasing number of illegal tours conducted by unlicensed individuals, highlighting that this harms the profession and the image of Cyprus as a tourist destination. Controls are considered inadequate, resulting in tours being conducted without a license, while the impact affects both professional tour guides and tourists, as inaccurate information about Cyprus is sometimes disseminated. The Association calls for the creation of tourist police to intensify controls and enforce the fines provided for by law. At the same time, the contribution of initiatives such as inland programs and Christmas Villages to address the seasonality of tourism is recognized, while artificial intelligence is considered a useful tool, but not a substitute for the human experience offered by a professional tour guide. Approximately 400-450 professional tour guides operate in Cyprus, and a new two-year study program has been launched to train new guides in various languages.
