Emergency Meeting on Foot-and-Mouth Disease in Cyprus

An emergency meeting was held at the Coordination Center for Research and Rescue (CCRD) in Larnaca, chaired by the Minister of Justice, Kostas Fytiris, to address the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease. Representatives from various Ministries (Defense, Agriculture) and services (Veterinary Services, Police, Fire Service, National Guard) participated in the meeting. The meeting began at 8:30 am on Tuesday and focused on assessing the situation and coordinating efforts to prevent the spread of the disease. The presence of representatives from all relevant services underscores the seriousness of the situation and the need for immediate and effective action. According to a previous report, the cause of the outbreak is linked to animal feed originating from the occupied territories, which may have been discussed at the meeting. The lack of preventative vaccination exacerbates concerns about further spread of the disease. The meeting at the CCRD is part of the government's efforts to manage the crisis caused by the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease and to protect the country's livestock and economy. Announcements regarding the measures to be taken to address the disease are expected to follow.
