Journalists' Conditions Highlighted at Cyprus Journalists' Union Cake-Cutting Ceremony

The Cyprus Journalists' Union held its annual cake-cutting ceremony, with the Union's President, Giorgos Frangos, expressing his satisfaction with the presence of representatives from politics and society. However, the event was accompanied by criticism regarding the difficult working conditions and low salaries of journalists, as well as the lack of institutional recognition of the Union's press card. Mr. Frangos emphasized the need to improve working conditions, expand press freedom, and increase journalists' salaries. He also highlighted the need to increase job opportunities in the sector and avoid understaffing in the media. The President of the Union called on everyone to fight for the improvement of journalists' position. Furthermore, Mr. Frangos criticized the fact that the credentials of the Cypriot Presidency in the EU recognize only the identity card of the Press and Information Office, omitting to mention the validity of the Journalists' Union's press card. He considered this paradoxical and requested its immediate correction. Finally, Mr. Frangos underlined the importance of trade union rights and called on journalists to unite and fight collectively for their rights.
