OSAK Appeals to KEA and Pharmaceutical Companies Regarding Drug Contributions

The Cyprus Federation of Patient Associations (OSAK) expresses strong concern over recent changes in drug categories within the General Healthcare System, which are leading to increased contributions for patients without a change in the price of the medications. These changes particularly affect the elderly and low-income pensioners. OSAK has received complaints from patients and doctors regarding the increase in the financial burden for drugs prescribed for chronic conditions, due to the expiration of patents for original medications. The choice of medication is made by the treating physician and should not be influenced by changes in contributions. OSAK believes that patients should not bear the cost of changes arising from developments in the pharmaceutical market. It calls on the Health Insurance Organization (HIO) and pharmaceutical companies to consider solutions to avoid increasing the burden on patients and to ensure access to medication. OSAK has already begun discussions with the HIO on the issue and calls on pharmaceutical companies to engage in dialogue, with the aim of addressing the problem and ensuring the sustainability of pharmaceutical treatment for all patients.
