Theologian: Election of Metropolitan by the People is a Cypriot Custom

Theologian Dimitris Smyrlis characterized the election of a Metropolitan by the people as a unique “custom” of the Church of Cyprus, which is not followed in other Orthodox Churches. He noted that this process is often accompanied by interventions from political figures and phenomena of corruption, such as the gathering of electors in closed spaces to prevent their participation in the vote. However, Mr. Smyrlis opposed the modification of the Church's statute, believing that such a change would be hasty. Referring to the appeal of Bishop Tychikos to the Ecumenical Patriarchate, he argued that it has no substantial significance and could lead to disciplinary sanctions, including deposition.
