European Print Exhibition Opens in Nicosia from the Champi Collection

A new print exhibition has opened to the public at the Municipal Museum of Engraving Champi in Nicosia, on the occasion of the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of Europe. The exhibition presents the evolution of European printmaking from the 16th century to the present day, through works from the museum's rich collection. Curated by Helene Reeb, the exhibition focuses on the techniques of woodcut and copper engraving. The works on display have been selected based on the variety of periods and their thematic diversity, highlighting the different methods and possibilities of the two techniques. The exhibition aims to showcase the creativity of engravers and their inventiveness in relation to drawing and painting. Both independent works and book illustrations are presented, with the aim of highlighting the role of printmaking in the dissemination of images across all social strata. The exhibition offers a picture of European artistic movements and exchanges between European countries. Printmaking appeared in the West in the early 15th century and contributed decisively to the dissemination of texts and images. Woodcut, as the initial form of printmaking, was based on carving wooden blocks that could be easily printed along with the typesetting elements. Copper engraving, on the other hand, allowed for greater precision and detail.
