Increased Prison Sentence for Cannabis Possession in Cyprus

The Court of Appeal has increased a prison sentence to 3.5 years for a man convicted of possessing approximately one kilogram of cannabis with intent to supply to others. The initial sentence was 27 months with a three-year suspension, but the Attorney General appealed, deeming the original sentence insufficient. The Court of Appeal's decision is immediate and takes effect the same day. Despite the passage of four years since the initial conviction, the Court of Appeal considered the seriousness of the offense and the need for prevention justified the harsher sentence. The Legal Service argued that the initial sentence did not reflect case law and the need to deter similar crimes.
