EPANA Deems Panayiotou's Statements 'Deeply Disappointing and Offensive'

The EPANA (Committee for the Protection of Persons with Intellectual Disabilities) condemns the statements made by MEP Pheidi Panayiotou regarding people with intellectual disabilities, describing them as “deeply disappointing and offensive.” EPANA emphasizes that intellectual disability is not an illness, but a condition that can cause difficulties, but with the right support, individuals can improve and have a normal life. EPANA reminds that people with intellectual disabilities have the same rights as all citizens, as recognized by the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which has been ratified by Cyprus. Member states have a duty to protect these rights. EPANA calls on politicians and members of parliament to be aware of and promote the rights of people with intellectual disabilities, rather than ridicule or underestimate them. It asks Pheidi Panayiotou to withdraw his statements and reconsider his attitude towards people with intellectual disabilities.
