Driving License Fees: Citizens Pay Penalties Despite New Deadline

Despite the recent passage of legislation extending the deadline for renewing driving licenses, citizens continue to be charged late fees. Konstantinos Kouppis, an official from the Department of Road Transport, stated that the system is still operating under the old legislation, which set March 11th as the deadline. The extension will only be activated after the President of the Republic signs the law and it is published in the Official Gazette. There is uncertainty regarding the refund of money to those who paid the late fee after the law was passed. The Department of Road Transport will implement the provisions of the new legislation, without being able to predict whether a retroactive refund will be issued. So far, approximately 780,000 vehicles have renewed their licenses, with the largest peak in payments occurring in the last three days before the deadline. About 78,000 owners renewed their licenses the next day, paying the fee. The Department of Road Transport calls on the public to monitor official announcements for updates on the activation of the extension and the details of the implementation of the new legislation.
