WP: If ICE Agents Kill with Impunity, the Rule of Law is Already Dead

In an opinion piece for the Washington Post, the need for ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) agents to be held accountable for unjustified shootings of civilians is emphasized. The author stresses that if ICE agents can shoot with impunity, then the rule of law has been destroyed and it has turned into a police state. It is pointed out that the prosecution and police authorities of Minnesota have the authority to conduct investigations and prosecute ICE agents when they have not acted in a “necessary and proper” manner. However, the federal government is trying to obstruct these investigations. The author calls on the authorities of Minnesota to start investigations immediately, take testimonies from witnesses and collect evidence, even if this means facing obstacles from the federal government. He emphasizes that the failure to hold ICE agents accountable will undermine trust in the justice system. Finally, it is mentioned that ICE officers can request that the case be transferred to federal court, but even there state law will apply and state prosecutors will be responsible for the case. President Trump cannot grant clemency to ICE officers for violations of state law.
