Why Trump's Greenland Mining Dream Is Unrealistic

Donald Trump had expressed interest in exploiting Greenland's mineral wealth, particularly rare earth minerals, with the aim of curbing China's dominance in this field. However, experts point out that mining in Greenland is extremely difficult and economically unviable due to the extreme weather conditions and lack of infrastructure. According to reports, the Trump administration considered Greenland's deposits a significant strategic advantage, as rare earth minerals are essential for many technological and defense applications. Trump had stated that “we need Greenland” and hinted that he could put pressure on Denmark, to which Greenland belongs, to allow the exploitation of its minerals. Nevertheless, experts emphasize that the mining conditions in Greenland are so challenging that, in some cases, mining on the Moon is more feasible. Most of Greenland is covered in ice, temperatures are extremely low, and access to deposits is limited. Malte Huber, from The Arctic Institute, describes the idea of turning Greenland into a “factory” for rare earth minerals as “science fiction” and points out that the cost of mining in the Arctic is much higher compared to other regions of the world.
