Who is Maduro: From Bus Driver to President – The Collapse of Venezuela's Economy and Conflict with the US

Maduro has been president of Venezuela since 2013, taking power after the death of Hugo Chavez, the charismatic leftist leader and his political mentor. His professional journey began far from the political arena. He worked as a bus driver, then became involved in trade unionism, and later entered Chavez's government, serving as Foreign Minister and Vice President. Despite his institutional rise, his popularity never reached that of his predecessor, who had a particular ability to communicate with the working classes. During his tenure, Venezuela's economy collapsed, following years of economic mismanagement. Price controls and extensive social benefits exhausted oil revenues, while the fall in international oil prices in the 2010s made imports of food and medicine unaffordable. Printing money led to hyperinflation, effectively rendering the national currency useless, while corruption and international sanctions worsened the situation. The Maduro regime has been accused of repression, electoral fraud, and corruption, while relations with the United States have deteriorated due to the policy of the “Bolivarian Revolution” and accusations of drug trafficking. Maduro’s policies have led to a deep social and political crisis in Venezuela.
