When do Ursula and the Commissioners get raises?

Following recent reports regarding salary increases for Ursula von der Leyen and European Commissioners, Euronews explains the process and criteria governing their pay adjustments. These increases are not arbitrary but are based on a mechanism approved by EU member states and the European Parliament, linked to changes in the purchasing power of EU civil servants. The calculation is made by Eurostat and takes into account adjustments to the salaries of civil servants in Belgium, where most EU officials are based. The monthly salary of Ursula von der Leyen has increased from approximately €28,400 in 2020 to around €35,800 today, following this mechanism. However, these increases often lag behind inflation in member states, as seen in 2022 when the increase was 4.4% while inflation in Belgium reached 10.5%. A European Commission spokesperson emphasized that there are no "self-increasing salaries" and that the situation for 2025 is worse than the increases observed in member states. Furthermore, EU staff have experienced a significant loss of purchasing power between 2004 and 2025, around 11.9%, due to reforms and restrictions on salary adjustments.
