WhatsApp's New Obligations in Europe for User Protection

WhatsApp has been officially designated as a 'Very Large Online Platform' (VLOP) by the European Union under the Digital Services Act (DSA). This means it is subject to stricter regulatory obligations to protect its users, given that it has over 51 million monthly users in the EU. As a VLOP, WhatsApp must actively take measures to prevent the spread of misinformation and protect the mental health of users, especially minors. The European Commission will closely monitor the platform's operations and may impose fines of up to 6% of its global annual turnover in case of violations. WhatsApp has until mid-May to fully comply with the new requirements.
