WhatsApp Officially Blocked in Russia

Published February 12, 2026, 14:33

The Russian government has officially blocked the messaging app WhatsApp, citing its failure to comply with Russian legislation. The decision represents an escalation of pressure on Meta Platforms, which has been ongoing for six months, and is part of a broader effort by Russia to create and control a 'state' communications structure. The government is urging Russian citizens to use the state-owned messaging app MAX as an alternative. Meta Russia has already been designated as an extremist organization, which WhatsApp denounced as an attempt to completely block its operation. The company argues that blocking WhatsApp isolates over 100 million users from private and secure communication, leading to reduced safety for citizens in Russia. Reports indicate that websites linked to WhatsApp have been removed from Russia's national website registry, making access to the app possible only through a VPN. The state communications regulator, Roskomnadzor, has not responded to requests for comment. Russia has already blocked or restricted access to other popular social media platforms, such as Snapchat, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube, while simultaneously promoting the MAX app. Critics claim that MAX could be used to track users, which authorities deny, arguing that the app is designed to improve citizens' daily lives.
