What to Do and Not Do Regarding Missing Persons: Insights from a Bicommunal Organization

A team from the Syrian Committee on Missing Persons visited Cyprus to learn about the work of the Cyprus Missing Persons Investigation Committee (CMP). Activists from the bicommunal organization “Together We Can!” presented their experiences and answered questions. A key issue discussed was the non-disclosure of the cause of death to relatives, a practice agreed upon by both communities to protect individuals considered responsible for the disappearances. Furthermore, it was reported that financial support for funerals is not always given directly to families, but to certain NGOs, which has caused some backlash. Finally, it was highlighted that the CMP avoids collecting evidence from burial sites, as is done in other countries, and that in some cases encourages relatives to take legal action against “the other side.”
