What is a 'Blue Moon' and When Will We See One in 2026?

Published January 27, 2026, 11:16

The 'Blue Moon' is an astronomical phenomenon that has captured public interest in recent years, not because the moon literally turns blue, but due to the unique way it is defined. There are two definitions: the seasonal Blue Moon, which occurs when a season has four full moons instead of three, and the monthly Blue Moon, which is the second full moon within the same calendar month. The next Blue Moon is expected on May 31, 2026. Despite its name, the moon does not change color. A Blue Moon is not particularly rare, occurring approximately every two to three years. February cannot host a monthly Blue Moon due to its shorter length, and in some cases, it may not have a full moon at all, a phenomenon known as a 'Black Moon'.
