Water Supply: Scenarios of Cuts Due to Dam Levels and Desalination Delays

Growing concerns are being raised about potential water cuts in Cyprus this summer due to low dam levels and delays in the installation of new desalination plants. The overall dam capacity stands at just 12.1%, significantly lower compared to the 26.1% of the same period last year. Despite promises to launch desalination plants in Limassol by June 2025, implementation has been delayed. The president of the Limassol Water Development Corporation, Yannis Tsouloftas, emphasized that Limassol's water supply heavily relies on dams, as the existing desalination plant covers less than half of the city's needs. Furthermore, he criticized the slow pace of the state mechanism in installing new desalination plants, highlighting the need for faster action to address the water crisis.
