Water Supply Concerns in Cyprus: Cuts Looming if Conservation Efforts Fail

Published January 28, 2026, 07:27

The President of the Larnaca Provincial Self-Governing Organization (PSA), Angelos Chatzicharalambous, stated that water conservation measures are essential to avoid water cuts to homes this summer. Estimates indicate that water allocations to PSAs in 2026 will be reduced by approximately 10% compared to 2025. Mr. Chatzicharalambous emphasized that the situation is challenging and that there has been a lack of planning by the Water Development Department. Therefore, citizen cooperation is crucial to achieve the goal of water conservation. The Larnaca PSA is taking immediate action, including strengthening teams to detect and repair leaks, replacing supplies in problematic areas, and disconnecting water to parks and green spaces. Additionally, nozzles will be distributed to consumers for installation on faucets, and awareness campaigns will be conducted to promote responsible water use. Particular concern is expressed for the adequacy of water for the agricultural sector, as it is expected to be the most affected by the drought. The issue was discussed at a meeting of the Water Resources Management Council of the Ministry of Agriculture with Agricultural Organizations.
