Water Cuts Announced for 2026, Hitting Agriculture Hard

The Council of Ministers has decided on significant cuts in water allocation for 2026, aiming to ensure Cyprus's water security. The reduction will reach 10% for domestic water supply and 33% for irrigation. The decision, resulting from the Advisory Committee for Water Management (ACWM), provides for the allocation of 103.4 million cubic meters for domestic use (down from 114 million in 2025) and 22.2 million cubic meters for irrigation (down from 33 million). Agricultural organizations strongly opposed the irrigation cut, arguing it would have serious consequences for primary production. There is a possibility of revising the decision if water inflows by April 30 exceed average levels. In this scenario, additional water quantities will be allocated. The Ministry of Agriculture estimates that the reduction in domestic water supply will not significantly affect citizens' daily lives, provided there is rational use and cooperation between relevant authorities. At the same time, the government is investing €6 million in water conservation programs for households, public buildings, and the tourism sector. However, a heavy blow is expected for the agricultural sector, as the cuts will put pressure on producers and production.
