Von der Leyen: Reunification of Cyprus Remains an Absolute Priority

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that the reunification of Cyprus remains an “absolute priority” for the European Union, linking the island’s division to broader European principles. She spoke at the opening ceremony of the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU. Von der Leyen expressed hope that 2026 could bring “renewed momentum towards a reunited Cyprus” and referred to the appointment of Johannes Hahn as the EU’s special envoy for Cyprus, emphasizing the importance the EU attaches to the issue. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that it is possible for the war in Ukraine to end during the Cypriot Presidency, while emphasizing that Ukraine deserves to be a full member of the EU. European Council President Antonio Costa stated that the EU cannot accept violations of international law in Cyprus, Latin America, Greenland, Ukraine, or Gaza. He stressed the importance of the Cypriot Presidency in supporting the reconstruction of Ukraine and promoting European integration.
