Von der Leyen: Reunification of Cyprus and Ukraine's Security as Goals for 2026

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, during the launch of the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU, positioned the security of Ukraine and the reunification of Cyprus as key goals for 2026. She stressed that Ukraine's security is inextricably linked to Europe's security and welcomed Cyprus's intention to promote the opening of negotiation clusters for Ukraine and Moldova. Von der Leyen acknowledged Cyprus's role in humanitarian aid to Gaza and firefighting. She reiterated the EU's commitment to a comprehensive, just, and sustainable solution to the Cyprus issue, mentioning the appointment of Johannes Hahn as the EU envoy. Finally, she emphasized the need for a more competitive and independent Europe, with reduced bureaucracy and completion of the Single Market.
