Von der Leyen Letter to Christodoulides and Metsola Regarding the CAP

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen sent a letter to the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, and the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, regarding the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). In the letter, von der Leyen assures that the CAP will remain a central pillar of European policy, with a guaranteed budget that will not be affected. The letter aims to smooth over the reactions of farmers in the face of the upcoming EU-Mercosur agreement. Von der Leyen emphasizes that the CAP will continue to provide a fair income to farmers, ensure food security, and improve the standard of living in rural areas. Early access to the resources of the CAP mid-term review is proposed, to provide immediate liquidity for farmers. In addition, crisis management tools are being strengthened, with increased funding to address market disruptions and natural disasters. Finally, von der Leyen pledges that at least 10% of CAP funds will be dedicated to supporting rural areas, with the aim of improving the quality of life and strengthening their economies.
