Volunteers Receive Death Threats – Parliament Requests Police Intervention

Volunteers from animal welfare organizations in Cyprus are receiving death threats, leading the Parliament's Environment Committee to request immediate police intervention. The threats began following publications on social media regarding missing cats. The animal welfare organizations accuse the Police of delaying the initial investigation into the disappearances, arguing that the lack of a prompt response led to the escalation of the situation and threats against volunteers. A search of a suspect's home led to the discovery of dozens of cats in good condition. Volunteers report receiving threats online, and in one case, unknown individuals surrounded a volunteer's home, requiring police intervention. In addition, an incident of physical assault against a volunteer was also reported. At the same time, volunteers are facing unfounded accusations, such as sending cats abroad for illegal activities. Parliament is asking the Police to protect the volunteers and investigate the threats.
