VIDEO: When Cyprus First Assumed the Presidency of the Council of Europe

Cyprus assumed the Presidency of the Council of the European Union for the first time on June 1st, 2012, amidst an economic crisis. The Presidency's motto was “Towards a Better Europe”. During the 6-month Presidency, Cyprus hosted 225 meetings and conferences, including 15 informal Councils of Ministers. Significant achievements included progress in negotiations on the Multiannual Financial Framework 2014-2020, the signing of the Single Supervisory Mechanism for the Banking Union, strengthening Frontex for border management, and promoting the Digital Agenda. The Presidency logo was a puzzle-ship, symbolizing the cooperation of member states and the island character of Cyprus.
