Veterinary Services: "We are still at the beginning" with foot-and-mouth disease

Veterinary services in Cyprus state that tackling the foot-and-mouth disease crisis is still in its early stages and could take up to six months, depending on the progress of vaccinations. The disease will be considered controlled when the virus is no longer detected in the country. Cyprus will return to its status as a foot-and-mouth disease-free country a few months after the complete disappearance of the virus. While not always fatal, the virus causes a significant reduction in milk production and delays the recovery of animals, leading to mass vaccinations. The spread of the virus would have been faster without the measures taken, potentially reducing milk production by up to 50%. Cyprus faces economic consequences due to the reduction in milk and meat production, as well as potential export bans. However, halloumi production is not expected to be affected due to the milk boiling process. The culling of animals is done to ensure the quality and adequacy of the livestock.
