Veterinary Services Warn of Disease Spread Risk During Mobilization

The Veterinary Services clarify that checks and sampling in the context of tackling foot-and-mouth disease are not random, but target potential movements of animals related to confirmed cases. They warn that the gathering of a large number of livestock farmers increases the risk of virus spread and call for responsibility and cooperation. The checks and sampling aim to protect herds and limit the spread of the disease. Laboratory tests detect viral antibodies, distinguishing vaccine antibodies from those resulting from actual infection. The Veterinary Services have informed livestock farmers since December 15th through various means (information material, sms, etc.) and operate telephone lines in each province to provide assistance and clarification. Veterinarians have the right to access animal premises for checks, aiming to protect the industry. Non-compliance with procedures may result in loss of compensation rights and a fine of up to €5000. Cooperation between veterinarians and livestock farmers is essential to address the crisis and return to normalcy.
