Venezuela: Delcy Rodriguez Sworn in as Interim President

Delcy Rodriguez has been sworn in as interim president of Venezuela while Nicolas Maduro is in the US facing drug trafficking charges. Rodriguez, the Vice President and Minister of Petroleum, was sworn in by her brother, Jorge, who is the President of the National Assembly. The inauguration took place after the election of 283 deputies in May, most of whom are supporters of the government. The opposition, led by Maria Corina Machado, who was recently awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, boycotted the process. The First Lady, Cilia Flores, was absent from the inauguration as she was abducted along with Maduro and is in New York. Rodriguez expressed her sadness over the “abduction” of Maduro and Flores, but also the honor she feels to be sworn in as president. Maduro, for his part, told a New York federal court that he is the legitimate president of Venezuela and that he is a “military prisoner.” The situation in Venezuela remains tense, with the US exerting strong pressure on the Maduro government. Rodriguez’s inauguration marks a new phase in the country’s political crisis.
