Vehicle License Renewal for 2026 Begins – What Drivers Need to Know

The process of renewing vehicle licenses for the year 2026 begins on January 7th, 2026. Owners can renew their licenses for periods of 3, 6, 9, or 12 months, with a deadline of March 11th, 2026. After the deadline, a fine of €10 plus 10% of the license value will be imposed. Renewal requires a certificate of roadworthiness and safety. The Department of Road Transport (DOT) has improved the computerized system and advises citizens not to leave the renewal to the last minute. Owners who do not renew their license must declare immobilization of their vehicle, otherwise they will continue to owe fees. Vehicles not renewed for 2025 and not declared immobilized will be deregistered unless the amount owed is paid. Renewal can be done online or at the DOT Provincial Offices, Citizen Service Centers (CSC), and Citizen Centers (CCO).
