US at UN Security Council: "We Desire a Better Future for Venezuela"

The US Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Michael Waltz, defended the recent US operation in Venezuela, describing it as a "surgical law enforcement operation" to arrest Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, who are accused of drug trafficking. Waltz stressed that this was not a war or occupation, but the enforcement of existing charges. He argued that Maduro is a "narco-terrorist" and an "illegal president" without international legitimacy, especially after the disputed 2024 elections. He noted that more than 50 countries do not recognize his re-election. Waltz accused Maduro of leading the "Cartel de los Soles" and collaborating with criminal networks. Waltz stated that the US desires a better future for Venezuela, which requires stabilization and security in the region. He denounced widespread human rights violations by the Maduro regime, resulting in over 8 million Venezuelans leaving the country. Finally, Waltz mentioned that President Trump had attempted to provide Maduro with avenues for de-escalation, but he refused. He emphasized that the US will not back down in its fight against narco-terrorism and will continue to pursue peace, freedom, and justice for the Venezuelan people.
