US Ambassador's Seating in Turkey's Defense Ministry Sparks Outrage

A photograph depicting the US Ambassador to Turkey, Tom Barrack, seated in the central chair during a meeting at the Turkish Ministry of National Defense has ignited strong reactions in Turkey. Many social media users and politicians negatively commented on the image, accusing the ambassador of behavior reminiscent of a “colonial governor.” The photo, released by Turkish authorities, shows Barrack seated in front of Turkish Defense Minister Yaşar Güler and other officials. This move is considered by many to be offensive and demeaning to Turkey. Although officials from the Ministry of National Defense stated that this practice is also followed with other foreign officials, the photograph with the US ambassador caused particular unrest. Journalist Barçın Yinanç noted that she has never seen such a protocol elsewhere in the world. Even members of the ruling AKP party, such as Bülent Arınç, expressed their concern about the breach of protocol, emphasizing that the image is difficult to justify and the practice should be reviewed.
