Upward Trend for Low-Cost Airlines

Low-cost airlines are steadily gaining ground in Europe and Greece, reshaping the aviation industry. According to Eurocontrol data, low-cost carriers now account for 35% of total traffic in Europe, slightly surpassing traditional airlines which also hold a 35% share. Compared to 2019, low-cost airlines have increased their market share by 4 percentage points, indicating a growing preference for affordable options. Europe represents approximately 27.5% of global low-cost airline traffic, with over 390 million passengers in 2024. Traditional airlines are responding to this trend by launching their own low-cost brands or offering budget packages. In Greece, Aegean remains the leader, while low-cost airlines hold 8% of the market, with Ryanair in the lead. At regional airports, the low-cost share reaches 39%, while a contraction is observed in the regional market overall, as travelers prefer flights from larger hubs.
