UNSC President Expects Smooth UNFICYP Mandate Renewal

The Permanent Representative of Somalia to the United Nations and President of the Security Council, Ambassador Abukar Dahir Osman, expressed confidence that the renewal of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) mandate will proceed smoothly. He emphasized the Security Council's support for the Good Offices of the Secretary-General and its commitment to an approach based on dialogue and de-escalation. Mr. Osman highlighted the importance of maintaining stability in Cyprus, respecting the existing status quo in the buffer zone, and acknowledged UNFICYP's stabilizing role. Within the framework of presenting the Security Council's work program for January 2026, the President of the Council stated that members would carefully consider the next steps, taking into account the Secretary-General's reports. The goal remains to strengthen the conditions for progress in the Cyprus issue through peaceful dialogue and the creation of an environment acceptable to all parties. Responding to a question from the Cyprus News Agency, Mr. Osman said he did not expect any problems with the mandate renewal. He pointed out that the Council consistently calls for dialogue, restraint, and a peaceful settlement through negotiations under the auspices of the United Nations. The statement by the President of the Security Council underscores the UN's continued commitment to resolving the Cyprus problem and maintaining stability in the region, while also recognizing the need for de-escalation and the promotion of trust between the parties involved.
