Unified Stormwater Management Plan Needed for Nicosia

Konstantinos Giorkatzis analyzes the deficiencies of the stormwater management system in Nicosia, which were highlighted by the recent heavy rainfall. The main problem is the lack of a unified network, as the system is fragmented along the administrative boundaries of the municipalities. Many networks are old and incomplete, while others are insufficient for the increased volumes of water due to urban expansion. The Nicosia Water Management Authority (EOA) was created to solve this problem, but the imposition of stormwater fees is necessary to finance the required projects. €1.6 million has been budgeted for 2026 for repairs and improvements, while state funding is also being sought for major flood prevention projects, such as retention ponds and the repair of the Kotsirka River. Cleaning work on drains has already been carried out in problematic areas.
