The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in Cyprus, Kasim Diian, is in New York to brief the UN Security Council on the situation on the island and UNFICYP. He will have meetings with the countries contributing to the peacekeeping force and with the Secretary-General himself, Antonio Guterres. On January 29, the Security Council will vote on renewing UNFICYP's mandate for another year. At the same time, a reduction in the budget of the Good Offices Office is being considered, as well as the abolition of jobs, due to the absence of official negotiations since 2017.
