UN Secretary-General's Report: Momentum in Cyprus Talks 'Encouraging but Early'

In his report, the UN Secretary-General describes the momentum in the Cyprus issue as “encouraging but early”. He states that informal meetings in an expanded format and contacts between the leaders of the two communities have shown a new opportunity for progress. Antonio Guterres welcomes the commitment of the leaders and the guarantor powers (Greece, Turkey, and the United Kingdom) to maintain their involvement, despite the fact that the peace process is at the longest period without active negotiations. Particular emphasis is placed on the joint meeting of the leaders on December 11, where discussions on key political issues took place for the first time in five years. The leaders agreed that their goal is a solution with political equality, as defined in UN Security Council resolutions. The Secretary-General calls on both sides to demonstrate greater determination in implementing confidence-building initiatives, such as opening new crossing points, and praises the role of Technical Committees in promoting cooperation.
