UN Condemns Deadly Violence Against Protesters in Iran as Violation of International Law

The UN has expressed deep concern over the violent suppression of protests in Iran, emphasizing that the use of lethal force against protesters constitutes a violation of international human rights law. Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, Stephane Dujarric, described the situation as “very worrying for the Middle East.” The UN stresses the inherent right of people to demonstrate peacefully and that law enforcement authorities must protect protesters. It points out that the use of force must be proportionate, something that has not been observed in the protests in Iran. Despite the difficulties in confirming the number of casualties due to restrictions on internet access, the UN acknowledges that a number of civilians have been killed. The UN human rights services are using multiple channels to collect information. The UN also expressed concern over the belligerent rhetoric heard from various sides regarding the situation in Iran and reiterated its call for a return to dialogue. It stressed that sanctions often harm civilians more than leaders and that every government has a responsibility for the well-being of its citizens.
