UN: Allegations of Israeli Torture of Palestinians

The UN Special Rapporteur for human rights in the occupied Palestinian territories, Francesca Albanese, has accused Israel of having been given "permission to torture Palestinians" by the international community. She argued that life in the occupied territories is an "endless cycle of physical and mental suffering" and that torture has become official policy of Israel. Ms. Albanese accused governments of allowing Israel to torture Palestinians and stressed that torture extends beyond prisons, creating a "torture environment" throughout the occupied territories. Her report states that Israeli authorities systematically torture Palestinians with the aim of "collective revenge." Ms. Albanese warned that disregard for international law could spread to other regions. The Israeli diplomatic mission rejected the allegations, describing Ms. Albanese as an "agent of chaos" and her report as a "politically charged rant."
